The most challenging and steepest route to Uhuru Peak, ideal for experienced trekkers seeking adventure and solitude.

The Umbwe Route is known for its steep ascent and dramatic scenery. It is less traveled, offering a quiet and more direct path to the summit. While physically demanding, it joins the Machame route at Barranco Camp and offers incredible views.

Day 01 :

Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

Begin your steep trek through the rainforest. The trail is narrow and direct.
Distance: 10 km | Duration: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Day 02 :

Umbwe Cave – Barranco Camp (3,900m)

Climb through heath zone and scramble over ridges before reaching Barranco Valley.
Distance: 6 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Heath & Moorland

Day 03 :

Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Ascend the iconic Barranco Wall and follow scenic ridges to Karanga.
Distance: 5 km | Duration: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 04 :

Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Trek to Barafu, the base camp for your summit push.
Distance: 4 km | Duration: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 05 :

Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Midnight start for the summit attempt. After reaching Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp.
Distance: 15 km | Duration: 12–14 hours | Habitat: Arctic to rainforest

Day 06 :

Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi/Arusha

Final descent through lush rainforest. Receive your summit certificate and return to your hotel. Distance: 10 km | Duration: 3–4 hours
